1000 Faces Coffee – April Featured Roaster

20110411-084239.jpg

We return to the South East this month, with selections from 1000 Faces Coffee in Athens Georgia. They are a relatively young and very passionate micro-roastery that has put a lot of thought into how they source, roast, and present their coffees. You can check out their impressive “manifesto” on their website.

Of course, we like their coffee too, and to start things off we’ve got two available by-the-bag and by-the-cup:

  • Burundi Kayanza Gatare
taste notes: dark berries and bergamot with a smooth and creamy body.
  • Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza
taste notes: deep earth, chocolate, and red fruit with a complex and layered mouthfeel

Both are available via Aeropress, Clever, or Chemex – or brew at home with a 12oz bag. Enjoy!

Final Shipment of Novo Coffee!

20110405-082318.jpg

We’ve been happy to have the privilege to feature and sell Novo Coffee (Denver, CO) for the last month and a half!  If you didn’t get a chance to try out their Ethiopia Aleta Wondo or the Papua New Guinea Kunjin, now is the time;  we have the our final shipment of coffee, for now, on the shelves.

Also, if you’re ever in Denver, where Novo was just voted “Best Local Roaster”, definitely check out their retail spots, or even arrange for a cupping at their roasting facility and see where the magic happens!

Stay tuned for our next Featured Roaster, coming soon!

New Tanzanian Chocolate

20110328-083608.jpg

We have a new chocolate bar in the store that is just amazing! Made by Askinosie Chocolate in Springfield, MS, this single-origin 72% dark chocolate bar is crafted from Trinitario cocoa beans grown by the UWATE cooperative in Tenende, Tanzania.

This bar is an example of the direct trade that has started to occur between artisinal chocolate makers and the cocoa growers. In addition to the trading partnership, Askinosie funded a deep water well for the community. However, it’s not just a great mission and story – this chocolate is also great quality.

Askinosie says “this mild bar has earthy notes with hints of tobacco and dried cherries and has a very smooth finish.” Interestingly, it would pair great with the tart berry notes in our Humphreys Street Tanzanian Ruvuma Peaberry coffee. Maybe it’s something in the soil…

Coffee Cost Increases

You may have heard it elsewhere, and now your going to hear it from us too: coffee prices have almost doubled in the last year, and are near a 13-year high on the commodity market. While Humphreys Street Coffee and other Specialty Coffee roasters have always paid a premium for high quality coffees, the market-wide increase has driven up everyones cost. We won’t attempt to give a full analysis of market factors, but suffice it to say this is a combination of increased demand, lower output, and a shift in funds by investors to commodity goods.
For more information, check out the fun-to-read, comic-book style explanation at Counter Culture Coffee.

In the coming weeks, we will be undergoing an evaluation of our cost of goods, coffee and otherwise, and there may be some items on our menu that increase in price. However, we are continually looking for ways to improve our already high quality products and service, and portion them in ways that keep the coffee and the coffee shop experience an affordable luxury.

Coffee and Tea…. And Chocolate?

We’re excited to announce that we’ve begun to make our own chocolate syrup in-house! After a long process of trying several artisan chocolates and cocoas, we’ve settled on using a single-bean origin cocoa from Ghana. It has an earthy flavor profile that blends nicely with espresso and milk – as well as making a killer hot chocolate.

Additionally, we’ve begun to carry their Dark Chocolate bars for retail – perhaps a few weeks too late for Valentines, but who needs an excuse for dark chocolate?

We hope that this will be the first of many artisan chocolates that we’ll be carrying at dose. Just like coffee and tea, single-origin chocolates have their own distinct characteristics. In our recent research, we’ve run across many chocolatiers that are engaging in what’s being called “bean-to-bar” chocolate making:  working with cocao farmers directly and preserving that quality along the chain-of-custody. This is similar to what coffee roasting companies have been doing in the last 10 years or so, and we think it fits right in with the kind of products we like at dose:  pure and unique, as close to the source as possible.

More on all of that soon! In the meantime enjoy our first foray into this exciting (and delicious) product.

Novo Coffee

We’re now brewing Novo Coffee, from Denver, CO via our By-the-Cup menu!

Novo will be our featured Roaster for the next month or so, and we’ve started off with two great new-crop coffees:  the Ethiopia Aleta Wondo and the Papua New Guinea Kunjin.

The Aleta Wondo has a really nice fresh floral sweetness that reminds us of plump, ripe blueberries. It’s medium body is balanced out by an excellent acidity that the roaster describes as “lemon-candy.”

The Papua New Guinea is equally distinctive, with a roasted red pepper flavor and a nice caramel sweetness. It’s luxuriant, silky body is true to the South Pacific origins of this coffee but, unlike its Indonesian counterparts, the cup is clean and crisp.

Also available by the 12oz bag for your home-brewing pleasure. Enjoy!
