We’re making a pretty big change at the shop this month, with the switch to Counter Culture Coffee in Durham, NC for our espresso and decaf espresso. Counter Culture has been a real pioneer in Direct Trade, which means they’ve worked extremely hard to develop long-term relationships with artisan coffee producers around the world – and of course pay them well for their hard work and quality product.
Of course Direct Trade is only one of the reasons we ultimately decided on switching to Counter Culture. Their quality is also top notch, with a full team of roasters and quality control folks making sure every roasted batch is as good as the last. This is particularly important for espresso. The drink that ends up in your hands is prepared from 40 or so coffee beans by your barista so defect free coffee and consistent roasting is important.

Our first espresso offering from CCC is their Apollo Seasonal Espresso. Apollo isan interesting project in which they switch the component(s) out seasonally, as new fresh-crop coffees arrive and the old ones fade. The 5.0 version is a single-origin espresso, comprising of 100% Organic Shilicho, Sidama, Ethiopia. Taste notes have ranged from “chocolate and citrus to delicately floral, sweet and balanced, to all out pop-and-zing.”
Additionally, we are featuring three great coffees from Counter Culture Coffee for the next couple of month on our retail shelves and by-the-cup:
- Concepción Huista (Jacaltenango, Guatemala) Complex cup carried by clean notes of fresh fruit and chocolate.
- Thiriku (Nyeri, Kenya) Fig, coconut, and pineapple above savory undertones and a dry finish
- Finca El Puente Microlot (Marcala, Honduras) Intensely fruity, bright and aromatic, with clean, clear notes of dried plum, white grape, and pear above a juicy body
